Is Europeon Rugby ready for a Euro Champs instead of the 6 N

I have found this post on The Planet rugby Chat Rugby from a Portuguse poster known as Raguebi
 
 (Raul Martins, ex president of the Portuguese union (FPR), was elected to represent FIRA-AER in the IRB, replacing Epalza, from Spain.
 
 In his words, his great mission is to try to get the approval of an euro championship with the 6N and the 4 best nations in ENC ("6NB"). This championship would start in 2009 and would be organized each 4 years. Showing some realism, he added: "but it's going to be very difficult to convince the very conservative leaders of IRB".)

Non credo che esistano le basi per una competizione equilibrata (quanto finirebbero Inghilterra-Bulgaria o Scozia-Ucraina?) e non penso neppure che un torneo del genere possa avere realmente senso. I Mondiali danno già a tutte le squadre la possibilità di aspirare, attraverso le qualificazioni, al massimo titolo planetario; in Europa è bello che viga un sistema diverso, basato su una tradizione ormai secolare. Forse, magari, sarebbe giusto creare un sistema di promozione/retrocessione tra l'ultima del Sei Nazioni e la prima del Sei Nazioni B, così come esiste tra l'ultima del B e la prima del C, tra l'ultima del C e la prima del D e così via.

Ci sono molti sport in cui i titoli sono giocati in base a gruppi con promozioni/retrocessioni (ad esempio i mondiali di hockey su ghiaccio). Quindi nel futuro il Sei Nazioni potrà essere articolato su una classifica biennale (per compensare il fattore campo) e con meccanismi di promozione/retrocessione. Tutto questo succederà non appena gli introiti economici tra "gruppo A" e "gruppo B" non saranno troppo dissimili.
 
 A dirla tutta, penso però che il futuro del nostro sport sia più legato alla formula del Seven che non a quella del gioco a quindici.
 I seven sono molto spettacolari e il format consente già ora di allargare di molto la base delle nazioni competitive.

Credo che il torneo delle 6 nazioni sia sia una questione di tradizione. Non avrebbe senso farlo senza la scozia o l'irlanda, e quindi non credo che verranno introdotte promozioni e retrocessioni.
 Sarebbe invece interessante introdurre un Campionato Europeo a cadenza quadriennale alternato ai mondiali come avviene nel calcio

Il 6 Nazioni è bello proprio x le tradizione e x' è elitario.
 Come quest'estate l'Inghilterra ha giocato un torneo con Argentina, USA e Canada, non vedo perchè in futuro non si possa fare una sorta di "Europeo" di rugby, soprattutto x sostenere la crescita di questo sport in nazioni di seconda fascia (che magari potrebbero anche giocare una sorta di qualificazione a tale torneo), in cui attualmente giocherebbero Romania - Portogallo - Georgia - Russia (secondo Ranking IRB).
 In futuro potremmo trovare anche altre nazioni europee quali Rep.Ceca, Spagna, Germania ed Ucraina (secondo rigoroso ordine di Ranking IRB).
 X le "grandi" potrebbe esser l'occasione per fare delle formazioni sperimentali, x l'Italia di vincere qualcosa (non sperimentando), x il rugby di avere più diffusione, x gli sponsor di fare affari (ipotiziamo un SeiNazioni + Germania + Spagna + Portogallo + Russia, attualmente non è rugbysticamente concepibile, ma commercialmente è un prodotto molto appetibile da vendere, soprattutto una volta ogni 4 anni).
 Il sistema delle promozioni non mi piace, soprattutto relativo al 6Nazioni e credo che il RUGBY sia RUGBY UNION a 15, poi esistono altri sport altrettanto belli e simili, ma diversi, che sono il SEVEN ed il Rugby League a 13.

 A 8 teams euro champ. would have the 6N, Romania and one of these four: Portugal, Georgia, Spain or Russia.
 
 A 10 teams euro champ. would have the 6N, Romania and 3 of these four: Portugal, Georgia, Spain, Russia.
 
 The proposal is a 10 teams euro champ., but, in 2009, I would prefer a 8 teams championship.

And it would be played only each 4 years. In the other years 6N tournament, as usual.

The proposal (euro championship with 10 teams, in 2009) was voted in a FIRA-AER meeting, some monthes ago.
 
 Does anyone knows if Italy voted for it?

Ciao Raguebi. I think european-10-teams-championship could be a good idea, but i'd prefer the actual situation. Six Nations (4N, 5N) is played from a century without (I suppose...) interruptions and I'd dislike if that new project will break this tradition. Imo the best solution will be a system of six-nations-categoires (6N A, 6N B, 6N C...) with a mechanism of promotion and degradation also between Six Nations A and B. It would be a sort of european championship open to all the country.
 
 PS: congratulation for the results of your country team, Portougal is the best surprise of these last years. In sevens you are stronger than us :-[

 The 1st problem is that 6N is organized by the 6 countries and the ENC ("6NB") is organized by FIRA-AER. It's impossible to have a promotion/relegation mechanism betweem 2 tournaments organized by different instituions.
 
 The 2nd problem is that 6N is an invitation tournament and no country in 6N would accept not being there without causing great problems.
 
 The 3rd problem is that countries like Romania and Portugal are not yet ready for being year after year in 6N. Portuguese rugby is fully amateur.
 
 Traditions can be break. What's the problem? Having Italy in the 6N is against traditions and it's a very good idea.

 Thanks. I dare to say that in 7s Portugal is far better than Sotland and Italy. But in XV, it's the opposite, of course.

That seems to be the bottom line, unpaid players in Portugal, no lack of passion, but the ability to do the little things like time for recovery , which if you are a pro is the difference between getting on the field with a week of Physio and working full time which can lead to a longer period out of the game
 
 Raguebi, Is there a simliar service to Sky Italia in Portugal?

Dico la mia ancora in italiano... Nulla vieta che in un futuro piu o meno lontano, se mai il rugby diventerà una sport praticato ad un livello omogeneo in tutta europa, come avviene per altri sport, che si possa organizzare un campionato europeo per nazioni interessante e competitivo. Organizzarlo adesso non avrebbe molto senso... L'italia sta partecipando al 6n ormai da diversi anni, e molto sio deve ancora fare prima che possa competere e giocarsi chances di vittoria finale. Figurarsi nazioni come la georgia, relativamente troppo deboli per competere( ma decisamente molto superioir alla finlandia o alla bosnia, il che fa delle competizioni a "fasce" la migliore maniera per mettere a confronto squadre di livello compatibile). Un europeo di rugby, al momento, sarebbe un pò come uno di Cricket o ruzzola. Non ci sono le condizioni per renderlo aperto a tutte le nazioni. Sarebbero sempre le stesse a giocarselo. Se in futuro la situazione dovesse cambiare il discorso sarebbe diverso, e ciò non comporterebbe necessariamente la scomparsa del 6n, che ricordiamolo è classificato come "amichevole".
