Around 3 000 people gathered on Monday afternoon to pay their final respects to the late rugby star Ettienne Botha at his funeral at the AGS Woord en Lewe church in Boksburg.

Mourners included celebrities, rugby players and fans, who paid tribute to the Blue Bulls player who was killed in a car accident last Wednesday.

Condolences came from high profile names such as England rugby coach Andy Robinson and former President Nelson Mandela, who personally phoned the Botha family over the weekend, the Cape Times reported.

The entire Blue Bulls team turned up en masse, ferried by two buses provided by the church, while Botha\'s former midfield partner Frikkie Welsh flew in from England where he plays for a club in Bath.

\"It wasn\'t even a choice. He was my mate and I had to be here,\" Welsh was quoted as saying.

Proof of Botha\'s popularity was reflected through the presence of players of the Falcons, Leopards, SWD Eagles, Sharks and Pumas.

Glamour celebrity couple Amor Vittone and Joost Van der Westhuizen, singer Steve Hofmeyr, Pieter Smith and Joel Stransky were amongst the many celebrities who attended, reported the daily

An emotional Dominee Hennie Pienaar described Botha as a \"legend in his lifetime\" and said he was \"the one player we all wanted to see in a Springbok jersey.\"

\"When he touched the ball, Loftus buzzed with anticipation. He was a national hero and on Wednesday South Africa lost one of its great sons,\" Pienaar said.

Springbok lock Victor Matfield also paid tribute to his teammate and personal friend, and the parents of the late Blue Bulls flyhalf, Francois Swart, who also died in a car accident last year, were among mourners.

SA Rugby president Brian van Rooyen caused speculation by his failure to attend and was apparently called away to \"more urgent business\", according to spokesperson Andre Bester.
