Captain Jerry takes his time

Monday May 29 2006

'With it comes a little bit of responsibility'

Hard-hitting Hurricanes flanker Jerry Collins is never one to hesitate when putting in his trademark big hits on defence. But when he was offered the All Blacks captaincy by coach Graham Henry, he took some time out before accepting the role, albeit just for a one-off battle with Argentina.
"I had to think about it, it's a big responsibility and I wanted to talk to some people first," the 30-Test veteran told New Zealand newspaper, the Dominion Post.
"I wanted to be sure it was the right thing to do."
According to the Post, Collins consulted fellow back row bruiser - and Hurricanes skipper - Rodney So'oialo, cousin Tana Umaga (the former All Black skipper who stepped down after last year), 'Canes coach Colin Cooper and team mentor Ian Kirkpatrick, before telling coach Graham Henry that he would accept the opportunity to skipper New Zealand.
"They said it's an honour to be asked and with it comes a little bit of responsibility, a bit more than you are used to," Collins told the Post.
Clearly humbled by the opportunity, he added: "I'm going over to Argentina with a bunch of other guys who are leaders in their own right.
"I suppose all I can do is do the best I can and be the best I can be at what I'm good at. It's only for one game... it's an honour and a privilege."
All Blacks boss Henry explained his decision to hand the captaincy to Collins: "Jerry has been outstanding in this group over the past year. He was instrumental in helping us achieve our results last year against the Lions, the Tri-Nations and in the end-of-year tour.
"We wouldn't have won at Twickenham if Jerry Collins hadn't been playing. He was a colossus in that game. He leads by example, he is respected by the troops, he has experience in leadership - so we're looking for him to make the next step."
