In 1962, the psychiatrist Louis Jolyon West and his colleague at the University of Oklahoma, Chester M Pierce, decided to inject an elephant called Tusko with 297mg of the hallucinogenic drug LSD. Simply, it would seem, to see what might happen.

"Five minutes after the injection, he trumpeted, collapsed, fell heavily on to his right side, and went into status epilepticus," noted the scientists in their research paper. "It appears that the elephant is highly sensitive to the effects of LSD."

I was reminded of this rather unsavoury chapter in experimental psychology while watching Mauro Bergamasco flounder about in the first half of Italy's Six Nations defeat to England on Saturday.

Just as it doesn't require a doctorate in psychiatry to work out that exposing an elephant to industrial amounts of a mind-bending drug would be unlikely to do him any favours, you didn't need to be an experienced international rugby coach to work out that picking Bergamasco, a career open-side flanker, would end in disaster.

And I don't say this with the benefit of hindsight. Before the match at Twickenham, I bumped into an old school mate who pointed out, quite rightly, that if we saw a flanker playing at nine at our old boy's club, we'd think the coach had lost his marbles.

Coach Nick Mallett's harebrained experiment, while falling a long way short of animal brutality, was also cruel in its own way.

Baffingly, Mallett said afterwards that he'd thought about replacing Bergamasco after 25 minutes, but "didn't want to take him off like that in front of 80,000 people". So Bergamasco, a great servant for Italy since making his debut in 1998, carried on embarrassing himself in front of 80,000 people for 15 minutes longer instead.

It took only two minutes for Mallett's folly to be exposed as Bergamasco, momentarily forgetting he was momentarily not a flanker, got scragged ferreting around in the back of a ruck, England hacked through and Andy Goode scored from his own grubber kick moments later.

Not long after, Bergamasco was again sucked into the mire, allowing Harry Ellis to scamper over unopposed, before a wild fling off his left hand eluded centre Gonzalo Garcia and was kicked through by Goode for Riki Flutey to score.

When Italian fly-half Andrea Marcato left the field on 29 minutes, I wanted to run on the pitch and give him a big hug.

Non credo sia da interpretare così: è piuttosto un modo elegante per dire "non è capace". Come la famosa frase di fine provino per gli aspiranti attori: se ti dicono "le faremo sapere" significa che t'hanno segato. Non sono esperto di mondo anglosassone e di parlanti di lingua inglese, ma mi pare di capire che specialmente inglesi e americani usino molto questo tipo di understatement. Per questo non prenderei alla lettera nemmeno la frase di Mallet "Mauro non è ancora pronto": può anche essere stato un modo per venirne fuori senza dire "ho fatto una cappellata" o peggio "Mauro ha dimostrato di essere un disastro a mm".
Del resto, pensa al taglio delle tasse, all'innalzamento delle pensioni, al calo dei prezzi dell'energia: tutta roba che s'ha da fare "ma adesso i tempi non sono adatti". Cioè: scordatevelo.
Quindi direi che il Times non dà per scontato che la cosa si ripeterà: più semplicemente, non ha voluto infierire sul ragazzo.

Penso sia da interpretare come "humour inglese", nel senso che stanno prendendoci per il c.u.l.o con una certa classe.

Purtroppo fa coppia con questa dichiarazione di NM:

Non credo.... In effetti uno che ha il coraggio di dire che Mauro Bergamasco, flanker di valore mondiale con 70 partite in nazionale e 46 partite nelle coppe europee, a 30 anni debba cambiare ruolo (ma è ancora un pò prestino), sia da ricovero immediato.
