jpw im part of the 'behind the scenes' at viadana and i can tell you our top payed player gets around 5000 euro(a month) who i cant say for privacy reasons. in our team the medium wage is about 2500 euro in the 30 wide group. i believe this to be the same for the other top 2 teams treviso and calvisano. hope this helps.

<BR>I migliori giocatori in Italia (pochi) guadagnano 50.000 - 60.000 euro all'anno (ma alcuni club considerano l'anno come "stagione agonistica"). Mauro Bergamasco (che non è un "top player" in Francia) ne guadagna 200.000. Ecco che in pratica gli incassi dello scarso pubblico italiano in proporzione incidono sul budget tanto quanto i grandi incassi del rugby francese.
<BR>Le squadre falliscono anche nei Paesi rugbisticamente più progrediti (vedi Grenoble ed altre, anche nei Paesi britannici - ricordate il numero otto del Galles che giocava in nazionale anche quando era "disoccupato" perchè il suo club era fallito - lo stipendio glielo pagava un mecenate privato)

JPW hey mate, I am italian but im living in aotearoa. you were asking about the development programme to schools. I think there is a major problem about this: the lack of facilities in the italian schools. coming form your country and mine (i mean NZ) you can spot the huge difference regarding what school sport cordinators can utilise to introduce new activities to youngsters aged 5/17 and 17/20 in university realities.

<BR>Itlian schools do not have rugby fields to be used within their complex and the educational sport programe are so poor that cannot deliver a decent service. Therefore in case a rugby development programme is put in place, schools do not dedicate much hours to bring students outside there and use club facilities.

<BR>Iam a development officer for squash auckland and my job is introduce the game to as much as schools as possible in my district (we talk about 400 schools per year with more than 200.000 kids) but then there is the big dilemma of: "how do you pull those kids from the education environment to a club, make them pay a membership fee and make them train to participate to champs?" The Italian rugby Union must find a format a formula a big idea to develop the game from very early stages. An ultimate goal would be a complete 100% italian national representative teams in 15 years time. It would measure the success in delivering the best rugby system in schools from today.

Prendendo a riferimento Calvisano, sulla base delle stime correnti, avremmo: 3,5 milioni di Euro di Budget x una società che nel 2005 ha vinto Campionato e Campionato U21, con i top player che ricevono 50/60.000 euro l'anno + casa e macchina (ipotizzo) con una rosa di circa 35 giocatori.
<BR>Un non top player come Mauro Bergamasco percepisce 200,00 € l'anno.
<BR>Ipotizzo che con 2,5 milioni di euro si gestiscano (ampiamente) le spese della società (tutte) escluso il monte ingaggi.
<BR>Ipotizzo 15 giocatori da 200.000 € a stagione, più 10 da 80.000, più 10 ragazzi del vivaio da 20.000 € + 2 stelle da 500.000 (cifre puramente inventate sulla base di quanto detto).
<BR>Con un budget da 6,5/7 milioni l'anno una società, anche neopromossa, potrebbe presentare una formazione in grado di vincere il Super10, la Coppa Italia e ben figurare in Europa (a livello della famosa Celtic League), il tutto garantendosi i fondi necessari per investire su vivai e promozione.

The favorable Italian Tax laws allow companies to invest in club sponsorship and benefit from certain 'flexible' invoicing systems, wherein the actual amount 'donated' is in fact multiplied when the invoice to the company is produced, so if a company gives 10K then the club may be able to produce an invoice for 25k with the obvious tax benefits. The Finance Guards are prepared to turn a blind eye to this. In a club such as ours where we have over 100 active paying sponsors it's not difficult to accumulate a healthy bank balance. This supports our 35 full time players. Neither the Government nor the Governing body (FIR) give any money to the clubs, and in fact are only too keen to fine clubs for small errors rather than assist with contributions. An average player would earn about 3k per month, tax free, and would also have benefits such as a car, accomodation and meals paid for. He would generally be given all playing and training kit, so the wage earned is basically pocket money.

<BR>I'm director of development for a S10 club here in Italy, and can confirm all of your comments about schools activity (or lack of...).
<BR>We fight a constant battle to gain a foothold in schools, but once we are in, they see the benefit of what we do. Our biggest job is to harness the help of the teachers themselves, as they look upon us as supply teachers rather than use us as an opportunity to add something to their CV. Our ruling therefore is that we not only offer school sessions, but also that the teacher must be present and actively help during the work. I have no hesitation in pulling one of our schools staff (I have 3 full time) out of a school if the teacher leaves the gym or field with the usual lame excuse (going to the office for 2 minutes; just need to do a bit of homework marking,) etc. I'm sure you know the routine.
<BR>We also only use Tag rugby in schools to begin with, as the biggest enemy is the violent image that rugby has had for years.
<BR>What we do 'major' on in fact is teacher development as a stand alone experience, and regularly run 'in house' teacher development days. We give them coffee, indoor and outdoor session, lunch, seminar ref. the development of the game, some personalized kit (Rugby Viadana Schools Project Staff Polo shirt) and some balls, Tags and resource material to become independant in their school work. We also give them a certificate of attendance, and follow up with a visit to their school some weeks later to monitor how things are going. Now however in our town and the surrounding 30 kms radius it's difficult for a boy or girl to arrive in school year 7 or 8 without having had some rugby experience or other.
