AUSTRALIAN rugby has been rocked by the news that a second young Wallaby will face a criminal charge in the space of a week after NSW utility back Kurtley Beale was charged with assault.

Wallabies playmaker Quade Cooper appeared in Southport Magistrates Court on a burglary charge last Friday and the case has been adjourned until July 2.

And now Beale will appear in Mount Druitt Local Court in western Sydney on January 13 on a charge of common assault.

Beale, 21, has told rugby officials that he denies the allegation and he will vigorously defend the charge.

The allegation arose from a family birthday party in Sydney last July and it is understood it involves a female cousin.

It is understood the complainant sustained no visible physical injury and there was no eyewitness.

Police were not called at the time of the alleged assault. A complaint was made at a later date.

"Kurtley has told us he will vigorously defend the charge and denies the allegation. He is entitled to the presumption of innocence," an ARU spokesman said.

"Obviously, the ARU and the NSWRU are concerned that one of our players will be facing court next month and the nature of the charge.

"We have spoken to Kurtley over the last 24 hours.

"As a result of those discussions we have reached a mutual agreement that as the court appearance follows only a few days after his scheduled return to Waratahs training, it would be sensible for Kurtley to stay on leave until after the court appearance.

"Under the ARU code of conduct protocols, the matter will also be referred to a disciplinary tribunal established by the NSWRU.

"However, any review by a rugby disciplinary tribunal would only follow resolution of the matter in the court."

While rugby officials come to terms with the Beale allegation, the ARU and QRU are expected to reach a position on Cooper's status in the next few days.

While Cooper is yet to be tried in court, the ARU and QRU must decide whether he has brought the game into disrepute and should be stood down by Queensland, pending his court hearing.

Beale and Cooper were former Australian Schoolboy stars and arrived on the Super rugby scene with the Waratahs and Reds respectively in 2007 with great expectations.

After establishing themselves as Super rugby players, both Beale and Cooper were regarded as future Wallabies.

Cooper got the jump on Beale when he was selected to tour Hong Kong and Europe with the Wallabies at the end of last year, making his Test debut against Italy in Padua.

But Beale joined Cooper in the gold jersey on the recent tour to Tokyo, Britain and Ireland.

Beale played for Australia in midweek games against Gloucester and Cardiff and came off the bench to play on the wing in the Test win against Wales in Cardiff.

One of nine uncapped players on the tour, Beale was the only one to earn a Test cap.
