New Zealand win Dubai Sevens
(IRB.COM) Saturday 1 December 2007

New Zealand captain DJ Forbes lifts the trophyNew Zealand seized control of the final with a fine first half display against Fiji, but then had to withstand an incredible fight back from the islanders to win the Emirates Airline Dubai Sevens for the first time since 2002.

Leading 21-0 at the break after tries by Zar Lawrence (2) and Nigel Hunt, Gordon Tietjens' men stretched that advantage to 26-0 when Steven Yates crossed after Neumi Nanuku became the second Fijian player to be sin-binned in the final.

Fiji threw caution to the wind, attacking from everywhere and were rewarded Nanuku, Vereniki Goneva and Akuila Nawerecagi touched down to cut the deficit to five with little more than a minute remaining.

However there was to be no fairytale fourth try for Fiji, that instead going to New Zealand when Yates rounded off a move in which they appeared to have knocked on, clinching a 31-21 victory.

The win represents New Zealand's third consecutive IRB Sevens Cup title after their crowning glory last season and gets their Series title defence off to the best possible start.

Two tries from Tomasi Cama had seen New Zealand recover from Renfred Dazel's opening try to lead South Africa 12-7 at half time in the first Cup semi-final. South Africa, who were missing the injured Mzwandile Stick, had beaten New Zealand in last year's final and thought they had won again when a Fabian Juries try was ruled out for a forward pass to him by Danwel Demas.

The second semi-final was equally dramatic with Tom Guest among the scorers as England fought back to trail Fiji by a single point - 22-21 - with little time remaining. The young England team thought they had then snatched it, but the ball was ruled held up and they could not find another way through.

Fiji had earlier ended Scotland's Cup challenge with a 28-5 defeat of Scotland, just as convincing as New Zealand's 40-7 victory over Argentina. South Africa though endured a scare, their 17-0 half time lead evaporating to just two as the fast finishing Kenyans scored three second half tries.

PLATE
Argentina won an equally dramatic Plate final with a 15-14 defeat of Samoa in a match which was the classic game of two halves. Samoa, beaten 26-19 by England in the Cup quarter-finals, led 14-0 at the break with tries by Pulemalie Sopo and Alafoti Fa'osiliva and seemed on course for victory.

But Argentina are renowned for their spirit and three quickfire tries - all of them unconverted - from Alejandro Abadie, record try scorer Santiago Gomez Cora and Agustin Gosio saw them deny Samoa the silverware in Dubai.

Argentina and Samoa will contest the Plate final after ending the challenges of Kenya and Scotland respectively. Lucas Gonzalez Amorosino scored two tries as Argentina ran out 17-14 winners, despite a last gasp try by Kenya's Collins Injera.

Samoa also found the going difficult against Scotland, who took the lead when Colin Gregor collected on the bounce to touch down. Two tries from Reupena Levasa stretched the lead before Scotland fought back to 21-19 only for Alafoti Fa'osiliva to score his second try of the match.

BOWL
Australia claimed the Bowl title after overcoming a brave Canadian outfit 31-0 with the electric Peter Owens scoring a hat-trick of tries. Canada went into the match without their wing Daniel van der Merwe due to an ankle ligament injury, and then saw Nathan Hirayama join him on crutches by its conclusion.

Van der Merwe and Hirayama had earlier helped Canada overcome France 21-5 in the semi-final and their North American rivals USA 21-12 in the last eight. Australia, meanwhile, had withstood a Welsh fight back to win their semi-final 22-19, after earlier dispatching Arabian Gulf 36-5.

Wales had needed a late try from James Merriman to pip Tunisia 17-12 in their quarter-final, while Zimbabwe had given France a scare with a fight back before Loic Mazieres crossed twice for a 24-19 victory.

SHIELD
Zimbabwe won the Shield with the last play of the game when Gerald Sibanda's brilliant step left the Tunisian defence flat-footed to go under the posts for his second try of the final and one that clinched a 22-19 victory.

Tunisia had started brightly, but tired at the end as Zimbabwe's pace proved the difference with the flying Wensley Mbanje also scoring a try double to show why he'd been shortlisted for the star of the tournament.

Sibanda and Tangai Nemadire had earlier helped Zimbabwe recover from 17-5 down at half time against USA to triumph 29-17 in the semi-final, while Tunisia ran out more convincing winners - 36-0 against the Arabian Gulf.

New Zealand retain George crown
(IRB.COM) Saturday 8 December 2007

New Zealand have now won the last four IRB Sevens World Series eventsNew Zealand maintained their perfect start to the 2007/08 IRB Sevens World Series with a 34-7 defeat of Fiji in the final of the Emirates Airline South Africa Sevens at Outeniqua Park in George on Saturday.

The defending champions raced into a 29-0 lead with tries from Lote Raikabula, Victor Vito (2), captain DJ Forbes and James Kamana before Neumi Nanuku scored Fiji's only try of the match.

Fiji, just as in the Dubai final last weekend, had two players sin-binned in a match which New Zealand controlled from start to finish with Israel Dagg completing the scoring with his first touch after coming on as a replacement.

The title is New Zealand's fourth consecutive in the IRB Sevens World Series after their victories in London, Edinburgh and Dubai and gives them a maximum 40 points from the opening two tournaments, eight more Fiji.

South Africa, semi-finalists in both Dubai and George, are third with 24 points, four more than Argentina, who followed up their Plate victory in Dubai with a Cup semi-final in George. England and Kenya are next, both with 12 points.

A hat-trick from Zar Lawrence had helped New Zealand beat Argentina 38-14 in the semi-final, the IRB Sevens World Series champions having beaten a committed USA 36-0 in the quarter-final.

Fiji's manner of victory in their semi-final was nowhere near as comfortable, the islanders scoring tries from Akuila Nawerecagi and Tomasi Mawa in the last two minutes to silence the vociferous home support with a 21-12 victory over South Africa.

The Springbok Sevens paid the price for not converting their attacking opportunities into points and experienced the same disappointment Scotland had endured at their hands in the quarter-finals when Vuyo Zangqa scored in the dying seconds to snatch a 21-17 win.

Neumi Nanuku had earlier scored two of Fiji's tries in their 24-12 defeat of Kenya, the Africans losing in the last eight of the Cup for the second tournament in a row. Argentina meanwhile had to come from behind twice to beat Samoa 22-19 in the other quarter-final.

PLATE
Kenya won a tightly contested Plate final, beating the USA 15-14 thanks to a brace from Dennis Mwanja either side of a try by Collins Injera. Chris Wyles and Nese Malifa scored for the USA, who have now scored more points in this tournament than in the whole of the 2006/07 Series.

The USA had earlier caused the biggest shock of the tournament when they beat Samoa 24-19 in the semi-final, tries from Nese Malifa, Takudzwa Ngwenya, Todd Clever and James Gillenwater establishing a 24-7 lead before the islanders fought back.

In the other semi-final Kenya heaped more heartache on Scotland with a last minute try by Peter Ocholla to snatch a 17-15 victory after tries from Andrew Dymock and Chris Kinloch had put Scotland into the lead.

BOWL
Tries from Richie Pugh and James Lewis saw Wales recover from 19-7 down to beat England 21-19 in the Bowl final. Anthony Elliott (2) and Joe Simpson put England - who were missing the impressive Ben Foden through injury - ahead, but Wales stormed back.

England had also raced out of the blocks in their semi-final, scoring three tries in the opening four minutes against Australia, but Elliott's sin-binning allowed their opponents back into the match before a great solo try by Foden sealed a 29-14 victory.

Foden had earlier scored two tries, a tally matched by Simpson, as a clinical England overpowered Canada 35-5 in the quarter-finals, while Damon Murphy scored four tries as Australia beat Uganda 34-7.

Wales had needed a sudden death try by Lewis to make the final, tries by Loic Mazieres and Eddy Labarthe bringing France back to 17-17 after the Welsh had led 17-5 at half-time.

Wales had nearly led another lead slip in their quarter-final, having led 31-5 until three tries in quick succession prompted a Tunisian revival that ultimately came up just short, while France had earlier run out 24-19 winners over Zimbabwe.

SHIELD
Adam Kleeberger scored a hat-trick of tries as Canada finished the tournament strongly with a 31-14 defeat of Zimbabwe in the final. The Canadians raced out to a 26-0 lead at half-time with Zimbabwe's tries coming from Alex Ndangana and Tangai Nemadire.

Canada had earlier scored five tries - two of them by Sean-Michael Stephen - to pick up their first win of the tournament, 31-5 over Uganda in the semi-final. Zimbabwe, meanwhile, had overcome Tunisia 21-17 in the all African-affair.

The sides had met in the Shield final in Dubai when Zimbabwe came back at the end to win 22-19, but this time they raced into an early lead with two Wensley Mbanje tries and survived a late fight back from the Tunisians.
